Nix Nature Center Loop Hike – Easy to Reach but in the Heart of Nature Setting the Scene: Hiking in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park Laguna Beach is an oasis of relaxation. It has beautiful beaches and coves, a totally “chill” vibe, charming boutiques, and trendy eateries. What makes it unique in southern Orange County, though, is the vast greenbelt of nature that surrounds it. All visitors to Laguna arrive by way of Pacific Coast Highway or on Laguna Canyon Road. Both routes go through the vast Laguna Coast Wilderness Park that hugs the town like a blanket. Hiking within this park is incredible and varies from easy, paved routes to more difficult trails. Most people drive right through the canyon to get to the pleasant town and beaches. But if you’re planning a day or weekend trip to Laguna Beach, I would highly recommend stopping at the Nix Nature Center on Laguna Canyon Road to pick up a trail map, visit with the amazing volunteers and rangers, fill up your water bottles and explore one of the many hiking trails in the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Starting the Hike After parking at Nix Nature Center on the west side of Highway 133, just north of the Toll Road (SR 73), I chose a loop hike called the Nix Nature Center Loop Hike. It starts from the parking lot, heading south on the well-marked Stagecoach South Trail. This part of the hike was moderate, with some small rises and descents. Although the Canyon Road and the Toll Road were within view for much of this early part of the hike, the beauty of the canyon meandering through fragrant vegetation and brush was breathtaking! So Many Trails to Choose From Some hikers with small children might choose to turn around at the end of the Stagecoach South Trail, where it meets with the Camarillo Canyon Trail. I continued on the new trail, heading north. It is labeled as difficult but was easily navigated with a simple pair of sneakers as it rose in elevation, finally meeting up with the more moderate Serrano Ridge Trail at an elevation of 500 feet. It meanders along the ridge between the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and the Irvine Open Space Preserve. Here there is no road noise, only open vistas, and nothing but nature in every direction. I saw a deer in a small meadow and met a ranger who was documenting the deer’s location. During the drier years, she told me most deer moved out of the canyon but have started to return slowly due to the recent wet winters. Eventually I turned south on the clearly posted Little Sycamore Canyon Trail that brought me down in elevation into the canyon again. Small wooden bridges crossed creeks, and views of blue lakes in the distance made it seem impossible that busy south Orange County towns were only a few miles away. The hike took me two hours and covered 4.8 miles. Many parts of it allowed mountain biking, but where I encountered cyclists there was plenty of room on the trail for both of us. Visit the Nix Nature Center The restrooms at the Nix Nature Center were very clean, and the exhibits within were worth the time to stop in and see. The staff suggested more hikes in the Wilderness Park and explained how some of its trails meet up with the trails in nearby Crystal Cove State Park, reaching the beaches north of Laguna and south of Newport Coast. Enjoy Your Day in Laguna Beach After a rejuvenating nature hike and a 7-minute drive into Laguna, I found myself sitting at Main Beach enjoying a cup of coffee while watching the waves crash in front of the famous Lifeguard Tower. With the rest of the day to wander the quaint town, I felt great having explored a little bit of the environment around Laguna Beach that keeps it so unique and special. On your next trip to Orange County, leave a couple hours early and stop to take a hike on your way to picturesque Laguna Beach. I’ll be honest - Nail salons in Laguna Beach are just about everywhere. We all know, though, that all salons are not alike! My favorite salon for my regular pedicures is Cosmo Nail Bar on Broadway Street in Laguna. I am not paid by Cosmo. I am a very happy customer who has been going there for many years, and I am happy to share what a great place it is with you. Many tourists drive straight down Broadway to get to the beach without stopping or shopping along the way. Locals, though, love the shops and services along Broadway. Cosmo Nail Bar is located at 274 Broadway Street and has a huge following of local patrons who like the laid-back vibe of the salon, only one block away from Pacific Coast Highway, right in the heart of town. My feet have been around the world a few times, and most of my steps have been in my trusty Rainbow flip flops, or when I’m running with my well-worn calluses in my favorite sneakers. Many of the more dainty, hip salons balk at my size 10 funny-looking feet. The wonderful staff at Cosmo Nail Bar welcome me every time, never making me self conscious of my well-used and worn out toes. My favorite pedicurist is Tina. She works away on my tootsies, fixing all of my problems with extra long scrubs, a whole bunch of filing, and the best foot and leg massages in town! Truly, Tina is like the Michelangelo of salon ladies, making even my funny feet look good after a 45-minute session chipping away at all life throws at them. It is crazy how good she can make feet look! I feel like a foot model walking out of the salon in my flip flops. Seriously - no joke! Almost every time I visit Cosmo Nail Bar, I see men enjoying their mani-pedi, too. Sometimes people come in with nail mishaps from lugging too much equipment to the beach or hotel. The staff at Cosmo always welcomes everybody, and I’ve never seen them turn anybody away because they are too busy. They always find a way to help everybody who walks in. I’m a regular polish kind of girl, but Cosmo does everything. Acrylic, gel, dips, nail repair, enhancements, massages, waxing and more. I usually walk in without an appointment, but most people call ahead to book their service. The number is 949-494-0373 (don’t forget to ask for Tina, if you're getting a pedicure!). The prices are very good for Laguna. Yesterday, I paid $42 for my pedicure with a whole bunch of add-ons like paraffin, long massage, and callus removal. So don’t hold back. Treat yourself to a great 45-minute break from the chaos of running around Laguna. Cosmo Nail Bar is close to everything, offers great services, and gets your feet ready for whatever great plans you have in Laguna Beach. It really does provide the best pedicure in Laguna Beach!

Art Walk in Laguna Beach is a celebration of creativity that transforms the town into an open-air gallery on the first Thursday of each month. This event invites art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike to explore a collection of works by local and regional artists showcased in the galleries and boutiques scattered throughout the downtown area. As visitors wander the streets, they can enjoy live music, engage with artists, and experience the blend of visual and performing arts that define Laguna Beach's historic artistic community. Art Walk highlights the town's creative spirit and fosters a deep appreciation for the diverse talents that Laguna is known for. This month, I chose to explore Gallery Row, in North Laguna on Pacific Coast Highway. This stretch of the highway includes numerous wonderful galleries. During Art Walk, many artists are available to speak with and the galleries offer snacks and refreshments while visitors browse and admire with live music in the background. What I really like about the monthly Art Walk tradition in Laguna is how there is no pressure to buy. I always get the sense that the artists are genuinely happy people have come to see their work and so much enjoy talking about it. My husband, brother and I stopped in several galleries along our walk but found ourselves spending a good amount of time in Studio 7 Gallery, a space known for its wonderful collection of contemporary artwork. Located in the heart of Gallery Row, it showcases a diverse array of pieces from emerging and established artists, reflecting a wide spectrum of styles and mediums. Studio 7 Gallery provides a platform for creativity and fosters an engaging dialogue between artists and art lovers. Its commitment to highlighting innovative talent and nurturing artistic conversations makes it a cherished destination in Laguna Beach’s thriving arts community. When we walked in, my eyes immediately went toward an amazing painting of two surfers holding their boards. The artist, Val Carson, saw my interest and we began a conversation about her work, passion for plein air painting, and love of the scenery of Laguna Beach and Crystal Cove. Val is a Contemporary California Impressionist who has traveled the world painting and sharing her love of art by teaching workshops both near and far. She is an amazing artist with numerous awards and exhibitions. Along with her work as a guest artist at Studio 7 Gallery, she has continuing exhibitions at the Crystal Cove Store/Gallery, at Ciao Baci on Catalina Island, and at the Valley Bronze Gallery in Joseph, Oregon. Val is delightful and talented. Check out her website at www.valcarson.com . We also popped into Quorum Gallery, one of my favorite cooperative galleries in North Laguna. When I started buying art many years ago, this was where my first piece came from. On the monthly Art Walk evenings, Quorum always has multiple artists available to discuss their work. The gallery is intimate and bright, colorful and fun. The art is varied - and that is what I love about it. Every wall shows diverse ideas, techniques and talent. Our little group made our way through several more galleries as we walked south on Pacific Coast Highway. We crossed the street at Laguna’s Main Beach, then walked back up the hill to the Laguna Art Museum. As part of Laguna Beach's monthly art festivities, the museum opens its doors for visitors without charging admission, to showcase its impressive collection of California art. The museum’s Art Walk programs often feature artist talks, interactive displays, and exclusive previews, offering a unique opportunity to explore its rich collections in a social setting, highlighting its role as a cornerstone of Laguna Beach’s cultural landscape. This month, I really enjoyed the display of talent from the students at LCAD (Laguna College of Art and Design). Laguna Beach's Art Walk evenings embody the town's commitment to fostering a rich cultural community, blending art with social engagement. These monthly events transform Laguna into a canvas where visitors can explore galleries, interact with artists, and jump into the local arts scene. The combination of visual art, live music, and dialogue creates an unforgettable experience, highlighting the creative spirit of Laguna Beach. As the sun sets and the town comes alive with artistic energy, Art Walk evenings reaffirm Laguna Beach's status as a beacon of artistic inspiration.

Only a few miles south, in beautiful Dana Point, Doheny Beach has been the go-to beach for watersports, volleyball, cycling, camping, and exercising. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Doheny promises a variety of fun things to do. Here’s a comprehensive guide to making the most of your visit to Doheny State Beach. Arrival  As you approach Doheny State Beach , you’re greeted by the friendly State Parks staff. Use your CA State Parks Pass to zoom through the entrance gate in the left lane. If you do not have a pass, a nominal fee grants you a day of sun and surf in this beautiful setting. Once in the park, you have many options. Next to the entrance to the beach is a park-like area with tables, grass and trees, providing a perfect spot for a picnic, game of frisbee or a family gathering. The parking lot, though often busy on weekends, offers convenient access to the beach. The beach, named after the oil magnate Edward Doheny who once owned the land, is clean with wide stretches of sand and clear waters. The beach’s beauty, combined with its well-maintained facilities, makes it a favorite spot for both relaxation and recreation. If you’re a sunbather, you’ll love the expansive sandy beach where you can spread out your towel, soak up the sun, and watch the waves roll in. It continues for miles, and is a nice, long, flat trail. Another route goes south, meeting up with the San Clemente trails. The trail system is endless. Park at Doheny and explore! Setting the Stage (I mean table. . .) If you’re anything like me, finding that perfect burger is an adventure worth embarking on. You know, the kind of burger that makes your taste buds sing and your heart do a little happy dance. Recently, I found myself in the picturesque setting of Big Bear, California, where I discovered the best burger experience at Oakside Restaurant and Bar.  Buckle up; this is a juicy story you won’t want to miss! After a morning of adventure -hiking and playing around Big Bear Lake, I worked up an enormous appetite. On my search for lunch, I stumbled upon the best burger in Big Bear, right in the heart of the village. The Big Bear Vibe First off, let’s talk about Big Bear, California. Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, this charming town is like something out of a postcard. With its cozy cabins, amazing lake views, crisp mountain air, and 300 days of sunshine every year, it’s the kind of place that beckons you to slow down and savor life—starting with the food!  Arriving at Oakside Upon entering Oakside Restaurant and Bar , I was struck by the cozy and inviting vibe. Rustic wooden beams, a super friendly staff, and a decor that perfectly captures the mountain culture set the stage for what I already knew would be a memorable meal. The buzzing energy of families enjoying their meals and friends catching up over drinks at outside tables with fire pits made it feel like a place locals and visitors enjoy and visit often. I settled at a cozy table by the window. My eyes widened as I scanned through the menu selections—everything from salads to steaks, but my heart was set on one item: the Black and Bleu Burger. The Moment of Truth: The Black and Bleu Burger is the best burger in Big Bear! The Black and Bleu Burger promised a tantalizing combination of flavors that sounded like pure heaven: a juicy beef patty topped with Stilton blue cheese, lettuce, and tangy house-made sauce, all nestled within a brioche bun. I could already envision the first bite—a moment that would either lead to pure bliss or catastrophic disappointment. Spoiler alert: it was pure bliss! When the burger arrived, it looked like a work of art. The presentation was on point. I picked it up, feeling the warmth of the bun against my fingertips. It was time to dive in. The First Bite With the first bite, I was transported to burger paradise. The beef patty was cooked to perfection—juicy and flavorful, just as any good burger should be. The blue cheese added a creamy, tangy kick that balanced beautifully with the richness of sauce.  Each subsequent bite only confirmed my initial impression; this was hands down the best burger I had ever tasted. The combination of flavors and textures was so good, and I found myself savoring each bite while trying to remember to take a picture for my blog.  Side Dish Delight To accompany my burger, I ordered a side of sweet potato fries. They arrived hot, crispy, and golden-brown, dusted with just the right amount of sea salt. As I dipped them into the side of ranch dressing (I always order that), I knew I had found a new favorite side dish. The sweet and savory combo was perfect, and they paired wonderfully with my burger. A Toast to Big Bear As I enjoyed my meal, I took a moment to soak in the ambiance. Locals and tourists alike were laughing and sharing stories, and the staff was attentive without being intrusive.  Wrapping Up the Experience As I polished off the last bites of my burger, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad that this lunch adventure was coming to an end. I had experienced something truly special at Oakside Restaurant and Bar. The Black and Bleu Burger wasn’t just a meal; it was a moment that perfectly captured the essence of Big Bear—a mix of natural beauty, warmth, and unforgettable flavors. After settling the bill, I left the restaurant with a happy heart and a full stomach, eager to explore more of what Big Bear had to offer.
