Each year, my family takes our time strolling through the booths, finding one-of-a-kind gifts for loved ones (and, okay, sometimes for ourselves!). With every booth offering something original, there’s truly no better place to find gifts that are as unique as the people on your list. Holiday Fun for All Ages (Including Teens!) Even though my kids are getting older, there’s something about the Winter Fantasy that brings out everyone’s inner child. And yes, we still have a tradition of taking a photo with Santa, who somehow manages to be both warm and magical for kids of all ages. Santa’s set-up is beautifully decorated, creating the perfect backdrop for a family holiday photo. (Pro tip: get there early to beat the line if Santa photos are on your agenda.) Laguna locals tend to run into each other here, so it’s a great spot to bump into friends and neighbors, share a laugh, and celebrate the season together.  From classic comfort food to festive holiday treats, the food court has something for everyone. For families, there are plenty of kid-friendly options. Hot chocolate is always a hit, and you’ll often find live music nearby, on one of the three stages, adding to the merry atmosphere. The sounds of local musicians playing holiday tunes add a delightful soundtrack to the experience, and it’s one of those small touches that makes the Winter Fantasy feel like a true celebration. Exploring in Our Own Backyard Last weekend, my husband and I decided to get out of the house and enjoy a local adventure. One of the perks of living in Laguna is that we’re surrounded by so many incredible hiking trails, and sometimes we forget how much there is to explore in our backyard. So we spent one morning Hiking in Laguna Beach! Hiking in Laguna in the Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park This time, we chose to do a loop combining the West Ridge Trail and Canyon Acres Trail at Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. We parked at Alta Laguna Park in the Top of the World neighborhood, which really lives up to its name! We arrived early enough that parking was still abundant in the lot next to the playground. After making sure we had plenty of water and, of course, our phones for taking photos, we set off. Starting the Hike The trail starts right near the water tank—you can’t miss it. As soon as we rounded that tank, we were greeted by expansive views of the landscape. We could see Aliso Viejo, Aliso Niguel, and Laguna Hills stretched out beneath us, with the distant Saddleback Mountain standing tall in the background. I love moments like this when you can appreciate how much space and beauty surrounds you, even when you’re so close to home. We had a few options from this point. Several trails dip down toward Aliso Niguel, and the temptation to keep exploring different paths was strong. But we had a goal in mind, and we turned left onto the West Ridge Trail, wanting to head toward the ocean. The West Ridge Trail The West Ridge Trail runs across the canyon, parallel to scenic Skyline Drive, which is lined with homes that seem to dangle right on the edge of the canyon. Every time I see those houses, I remember how incredible it was to wake up every morning with those kinds of views - I grew up on that street, watching people hiking around on the very trail we were hiking! The West Ridge Trail itself is wide, well-marked, and pretty easy to follow. One of the things I enjoy about this trail is that it’s multi-use, so you’ll see mountain bikers in addition to fellow hikers. We came across a few cyclists, and it was fun to watch some of them challenge themselves on narrower, much steeper biking trails that splinter off from the main path. The Canyon Acres Trail As we continued along the ridge, we reached a fork in the trail and decided to take the Canyon Acres Trail. Now, this is where the hike starts to get more interesting! This trail is a bit steeper, and the descent was full of twists and turns. It felt a little more rugged and natural compared to the wide ridge trail, but that’s part of what made it so scenic and enjoyable.  We passed sandstone formations and scattered clusters of sagebrush, with the occasional lizard darting across the path. It was also quieter down here, and we didn’t see nearly as many people, so it really felt like we had the trail to ourselves. As we made our way to the bottom of the Canyon Acres Trail, we emerged near the end of the road in the Canyon Acres neighborhood of Laguna Beach. This was the halfway point of our hike, and we had a decision to make: we could have easily just continued walking into town, grabbed a coffee, and called it a day. But no, we had parked all the way up at Alta Laguna Park, so there was only one way to go: back up the hill! The Round Trip - It’s all Uphill! Now, the climb back up Canyon Acres is a different story. What was a relatively easy descent on the way down became a moderately strenuous challenge on the way up. The trail is steep in sections, and I could feel my legs starting to burn after a while.  I wouldn’t recommend going up this trail unless you’re in decent shape—there were a few spots where we really had to take it slow and catch our breath. I’m not sure I’d want to attempt it with small kids, either, unless they’re really used to hiking and don’t mind a tough challenge. Luckily, my husband and I weren’t in any kind of hurry, and we took full advantage of the opportunity to pause and admire the views as we ascended.  Time to Take some Pictures At one point, we found ourselves standing in front of a massive sandstone boulder that seemed like it was made for photos, so of course, we had to take a few shots. There’s something about the contrast between the pale-red rock and the greenery that makes for the perfect photo op, and it’s always fun to look back on these moments later. Hiking in Laguna - Such a Great Feeling As we got closer to the top, I found myself feeling a mix of exhaustion and satisfaction. This wasn’t one of those hikes where you push yourself to the limit, but it was definitely a good workout in parts—especially since we were taking our time and soaking everything in.  By the time we rounded the corner back to the West Ridge Trail, I could see the parking lot and knew we were almost finished. It was a great feeling knowing we had completed the loop and enjoyed every minute of it. The entire hike, including our photo stops and water breaks, took us about two hours and fifteen minutes to complete. In total, it was roughly 2.5 miles, but we certainly weren’t rushing. For us, this was more about spending time together, appreciating the natural beauty around us, and reminding ourselves of how lucky we are to live in a place with such easy access to the outdoors.  Conclusion It’s funny how even a local hike can feel like a little adventure. As we drove back home, we talked about how we need to make more time for these kinds of outings. Living in Laguna Beach, it’s easy to get caught up in daily routines and forget that we have access to some of the most beautiful trails in Southern California.  The hike inspired us to keep exploring new paths, discover more trails, and, of course, find new spots to take those all-important photos!

Escape to Catalina Island for a day of beauty and adventure just off the Southern California coast. A short ferry ride transports you to this picturesque paradise, where rugged hillsides meet pristine beaches. Whether you seek snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, hiking scenic trails with breathtaking views, or simply strolling through quaint shops and eateries, Catalina offers a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. Catalina Island beckons as a great day trip for those looking for a memorable coastal escape. Getting to Catalina is easy from Laguna Beach. The Catalina Flyer departs from Newport Beach, and the Catalina Express sails from Dana Point. We chose to take the 7:45am voyage from Newport Beach, and seemed to arrive on the island in no time at all. Avalon Bay shimmered in the beautiful morning light, providing an amazing foreground for the quaint, crescent shaped town climbing up the hillsides.  After a stroll through the fun streets flanked with cottages and shops, we found the Catalina Coffee & Cookie Company. The peanut butter cookie was amazing, and the coffee was just what I needed before our next adventure on the island. Walking along the shore, past the majestic and iconic Catalina Casino, we checked in at the Aerial Adventure. This is an amazing elevated obstacle course hanging from trees in a small valley behind Descanso Beach Club. After our guide, Ian, made sure our harnesses were secure and that our helmets fit, we tested our strength for the next two hours balancing, hoisting, pulling and pushing our bodies over fun obstacles hanging by ropes from tree to tree. Our group had teenagers in it, so we kept to the intermediate and advanced options, but there are great beginner options for younger adventurers. This was an amazing experience, and is an absolute must do if you come to Avalon with teens or young adults. After the unforgettable experience at the Aerial Adventure, we walked back to the Descanso Beach Resort and had lunch at the outdoor patio/bar. This was the place to be with people everywhere, a DJ, swimmers, loungers, and happy kids. Great food, great drinks, great fun. We walked back to the main part of town by the harbor, passing the Catalina Casino. While it is no longer a casino, it is open for tours. We chose to admire the amazing architecture and murals from the outside, though, and made our way to a golf cart rental shop, across from the Trailhead Adventure Center which is   the Catalina Island Conservancy’s visitor center. Armed with a free map and an easy to follow route, our 6-seater cart zoomed us up and around the hills of Avalon, providing numerous amazing photo stops for our postcard-worthy pictures. Another must do for a first time tourist to Catalina. Back in town after the 90-minute rental, we found plenty of options to fill our time before boarding the ferry back to the mainland. Ice cream shops, outdoor basketball courts, kayaking, paddle-boarding (SUP), shopping, or simply relaxing on the beach were all within easy reach. Nix Nature Center Loop Hike – Easy to Reach but in the Heart of Nature Setting the Scene: Hiking in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park Laguna Beach is an oasis of relaxation. It has beautiful beaches and coves, a totally “chill” vibe, charming boutiques, and trendy eateries. What makes it unique in southern Orange County, though, is the vast greenbelt of nature that surrounds it. All visitors to Laguna arrive by way of Pacific Coast Highway or on Laguna Canyon Road. Both routes go through the vast Laguna Coast Wilderness Park that hugs the town like a blanket. Hiking within this park is incredible and varies from easy, paved routes to more difficult trails. Most people drive right through the canyon to get to the pleasant town and beaches. But if you’re planning a day or weekend trip to Laguna Beach, I would highly recommend stopping at the Nix Nature Center on Laguna Canyon Road to pick up a trail map, visit with the amazing volunteers and rangers, fill up your water bottles and explore one of the many hiking trails in the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Starting the Hike After parking at Nix Nature Center on the west side of Highway 133, just north of the Toll Road (SR 73), I chose a loop hike called the Nix Nature Center Loop Hike. It starts from the parking lot, heading south on the well-marked Stagecoach South Trail. This part of the hike was moderate, with some small rises and descents. Although the Canyon Road and the Toll Road were within view for much of this early part of the hike, the beauty of the canyon meandering through fragrant vegetation and brush was breathtaking! So Many Trails to Choose From Some hikers with small children might choose to turn around at the end of the Stagecoach South Trail, where it meets with the Camarillo Canyon Trail. I continued on the new trail, heading north. It is labeled as difficult but was easily navigated with a simple pair of sneakers as it rose in elevation, finally meeting up with the more moderate Serrano Ridge Trail at an elevation of 500 feet. It meanders along the ridge between the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and the Irvine Open Space Preserve. Here there is no road noise, only open vistas, and nothing but nature in every direction. I saw a deer in a small meadow and met a ranger who was documenting the deer’s location. During the drier years, she told me most deer moved out of the canyon but have started to return slowly due to the recent wet winters. Eventually I turned south on the clearly posted Little Sycamore Canyon Trail that brought me down in elevation into the canyon again. Small wooden bridges crossed creeks, and views of blue lakes in the distance made it seem impossible that busy south Orange County towns were only a few miles away. The hike took me two hours and covered 4.8 miles. Many parts of it allowed mountain biking, but where I encountered cyclists there was plenty of room on the trail for both of us. Visit the Nix Nature Center The restrooms at the Nix Nature Center were very clean, and the exhibits within were worth the time to stop in and see. The staff suggested more hikes in the Wilderness Park and explained how some of its trails meet up with the trails in nearby Crystal Cove State Park, reaching the beaches north of Laguna and south of Newport Coast. Enjoy Your Day in Laguna Beach After a rejuvenating nature hike and a 7-minute drive into Laguna, I found myself sitting at Main Beach enjoying a cup of coffee while watching the waves crash in front of the famous Lifeguard Tower. With the rest of the day to wander the quaint town, I felt great having explored a little bit of the environment around Laguna Beach that keeps it so unique and special. On your next trip to Orange County, leave a couple hours early and stop to take a hike on your way to picturesque Laguna Beach. I’ll be honest - Nail salons in Laguna Beach are just about everywhere. We all know, though, that all salons are not alike! My favorite salon for my regular pedicures is Cosmo Nail Bar on Broadway Street in Laguna. I am not paid by Cosmo. Many tourists drive straight down Broadway to get to the beach without stopping or shopping along the way. Locals, though, love the shops and services along Broadway. Cosmo Nail Bar is located at 274 Broadway Street and has a huge following of local patrons who like the laid-back vibe of the salon, only one block away from Pacific Coast Highway, right in the heart of town. My feet have been around the world a few times, and most of my steps have been in my trusty Rainbow flip flops, or when I’m running with my well-worn calluses in my favorite sneakers. Many of the more dainty, hip salons balk at my size 10 funny-looking feet. The wonderful staff at Cosmo Nail Bar welcome me every time, never making me self conscious of my well-used and worn out toes. My favorite pedicurist is Tina. She works away on my tootsies, fixing all of my problems with extra long scrubs, a whole bunch of filing, and the best foot and leg massages in town! Truly, Tina is like the Michelangelo of salon ladies, making even my funny feet look good after a 45-minute session chipping away at all life throws at them. It is crazy how good she can make feet look! I feel like a foot model walking out of the salon in my flip flops. Seriously - no joke! Almost every time I visit Cosmo Nail Bar, I see men enjoying their mani-pedi, too. Sometimes people come in with nail mishaps from lugging too much equipment to the beach or hotel. The staff at Cosmo always welcomes everybody, and I’ve never seen them turn anybody away because they are too busy. They always find a way to help everybody who walks in. I’m a regular polish kind of girl, but Cosmo does everything. Acrylic, gel, dips, nail repair, enhancements, massages, waxing and more. I usually walk in without an appointment, but most people call ahead to book their service. The number is 949-494-0373 (don’t forget to ask for Tina, if you're getting a pedicure!). The prices are very good for Laguna. Yesterday, I paid $42 for my pedicure with a whole bunch of add-ons like paraffin, long massage, and callus removal. So don’t hold back.
