  • Walk Like a Local - Shoes to Wear in Laguna

It is completely normal to see surfers holding their boards, walking across PCH to catch some waves at Thalia or Rock Pile with nothing on their feet. Barefoot. We Laguna locals can always identify the tourist surfers because they have something on their feet. But the fashion around what shoes to wear in Laguna is actually a “thing,” and you’d better have at least one of the three shoe brands all locals have. Full disclosure: I am not sponsored by any of these brands. I love them all, and have them all, but receive nothing in return. Rainbow Sandals - The Shoes to Wear in Laguna More specifically, flip flops by Rainbow Sandals. I have had pairs of Rainbows in my closet continuously since I was in high school - and that was a long time ago! The Rainbow story started in the 1970s when Laguna resident Jay Longley "Sparky" made his first few pairs of comfortable rubber sandals in his garage and sold them through consignment and in Laguna Canyon. In the mid-1970s, he officially established the company and opened a store in nearby San Clemente (see the Rainbow Sandals story here ). People in Laguna simply call these amazing shoes “Rainbows,” and I do not know a single person here who doesn’t own a pair.  Uggs To many people, wearing a pair of sheepskin-lined boots around a beach town might seem crazy. In Laguna, this is the norm, strange as it may look. Every day, when I drop my son off at Laguna Beach High School, I see girls in tank tops and shorts sporting Ugg boots. It’s June now, and Uggs are still everywhere, and on everybody! The original Uggs were the brainchild of Brian Smith, a native Australian who wondered why California surfers didn’t warm up their cold feet with a pair of sheepskin-lined shoes like Aussie surfers did (see the Ugg story here ). Through ups and downs, his prototype finally caught on and became the staple piece of footwear for all girls and women in Laguna Beach. No kidding! My old-school mother just couldn’t bring herself to get a pair, but I wear mine with shorts, sweats, jeans and dresses. If I didn’t, people would think I was weird. Most of us have two pairs; boots and slip-ons.  Vans Also a southern California startup, Vans are extremely popular in Laguna Beach. Actually, they’re popular everywhere, but especially in places where skateboarding is widespread and celebrated. Laguna has a long history of skateboarding (it is kind of hilly here, a wonderland for skaters), so Vans really took off here in the 1970s and 1980s. Even when the brand took a dive, the shoes maintained a great reputation as the go to shoe for everybody. Their multiple colors, patterns, styles, and materials make for a versatile and personality-showing shoe. My son has at least three pairs in his closet right now, and another pair on his feet. We Laguna Beach natives are pretty good at identifying the tourists in town. But if you want to try to blend in, at least wear one of these fashionable footwear choices on your next trip to town.

  • Discover The Drake: Laguna Beach’s Ultimate Dining Experience

Introduction Driving along Pacific Coast Highway into Laguna Beach, it’s hard to miss The Drake. For months, I passed the facade with its warm glow and elegant sign, promising a dining experience that I kept telling myself I’d try “soon.” Finally, the perfect occasion arose, and now, after two unforgettable visits, I can confidently say that The Drake is my new favorite spot for a fancy night out. From the moment you step through the doors, you’re transported to a world that feels like a blend of an old jazz bar and a speakeasy. It is a place where service, outstanding food, and live music come together to create a one-of-a-kind experience. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself to an evening of indulgence, choose The Drake: Laguna Beach's Ultimate Dining Experience. Ambiance Walking into The Drake feels like stepping back in time, yet with a modern twist that keeps it fresh and inviting. The warm, dim lighting sets the tone for an intimate evening, whether you’re out for a romantic dinner or gathering with friends. Rich wood accents, plush seating, and the low hum of conversation add to the charm, creating a space that feels sophisticated and comfortable.  What sets The Drake apart is the music. Live performances fill the space seven nights a week, transforming an ordinary meal into an extraordinary event. The sound of smooth jazz, soulful blues, or other genres provides a relaxed but classy backdrop, perfectly complementing the restaurant’s overall vibe. The music isn’t just a side note. It’s a part of the experience, enhancing the atmosphere and making every visit feel special. From the moment you’re greeted at the door to the final note of the evening’s performance, The Drake offers a setting that feels like an escape. It’s a place where time slows down, and you can savor every moment in style. Food & Drink  The Drake’s menu is a celebration of creativity and flavor, offering dishes that are as beautifully presented as they are delicious. While the offerings change with the seasons, quality remains a hallmark of this dining experience. During my anniversary dinner in the summer, I indulged in the Umami Mushroom Crusted Halibut—a dish that was perfectly executed. Its delicate flavors, paired with a crisp and balanced Vodka Dirty Martini, made for an unforgettable meal. Seasonal changes ensure that no two visits to The Drake are ever quite the same, but the core of culinary excellence is always present. On my most recent visit, our party of four decided to start with a variety of appetizers, each more impressive than the last. The Jumbo Tiger Shrimp was a standout, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Equally memorable was the Crab Guacamole, a fresh and inventive take on a classic that left us scraping the dish for every last bite (we even had to order more blue corn chips). These small plates set the tone for the evening, offering a taste of the inventive menu. To complement the exceptional food, The Drake’s cocktail menu is equally noteworthy. Each visit has introduced me to something unique, from the classic Vodka Dirty Martini to the bold and festive Gingerbread Martini with tequila—a surprising yet delightful holiday twist. With an ever-changing selection of drinks and a wine list curated to match each dish, The Drake ensures that your meal is elevated from start to finish. Service  At The Drake, the service is what makes the experience extraordinary. The staff’s professionalism, warmth, and depth of knowledge are evident from the moment you arrive. It’s clear that every member of the team is not only well-trained but also genuinely invested in ensuring guests have an exceptional time. One standout from my visits is Taylor Roberts, a true jack-of-all-trades who elevates dining to an art form. Taylor's expertise spans every aspect of the experience, from suggesting the perfect cocktail to offering wine samples so guests can confidently choose their pairings. His menu recommendations reflect a deep understanding of flavor and preparation, and his easygoing demeanor makes even the most indecisive diner feel at ease. During our most recent visit, Taylor went above and beyond, guiding our party through the appetizer options and helping us navigate the wine list with thoughtful pairings. His suggestions were spot-on, enhancing the meal without ever feeling overbearing. Having someone like Taylor on hand adds a layer of care and expertise that makes you feel completely taken care of. This level of service is emblematic of The Drake as a whole. It’s not just about getting a meal. The experience is about being catered to in a way that feels effortless, leaving you free to relax, savor the flavors, and soak in the ambiance. Entertainment  One of the most distinctive features of The Drake is its commitment to live entertainment, which takes the dining experience to another level. Music is woven into the fabric of the restaurant’s ambiance, providing a soulful soundtrack to your evening. Seven nights a week, talented musicians take the stage, filling the space with the smooth sounds of jazz and other genres that perfectly complement the speakeasy vibe. The live performances are intimate yet dynamic, creating an atmosphere that feels vibrant and relaxing. The ensemble music matches the mood of the night, making every visit feel unique. The entertainment transforms The Drake from a simple dining spot to a destination. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself lingering, sipping on a cocktail or savoring a dessert, simply to enjoy the performance a little longer. The music, along with the incredible food and service makes each evening at The Drake truly special. For music lovers and casual diners alike, the live entertainment is a highlight worth experiencing. It’s not just dinner—it’s a show, a vibe, and an unforgettable memory. • Winter Fantasy at Sawdust Festival

A Local’s Guide to the Sawdust Festival Winter Fantasy: Art, Fun, and Festive Cheer in Laguna Beach As a Laguna Beach local, there’s one holiday tradition that my family and I look forward to all year long: the Sawdust Festival Winter Fantasy. With lights twinkling in the trees, the scent of cinnamon in the air, and rows of artisan booths brimming with unique holiday gifts, the festival has a magic all its own. Each year, we grab our tickets early, and when the day finally arrives, it feels like Laguna Beach transforms into a winter wonderland. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the festival or thinking of experiencing it for the first time, here’s what to expect from the 2024 Winter Fantasy, along with some local tips to make the most of your visit! A True Laguna Holiday Wonderland As you step into the Sawdust grounds, you’re greeted by the sparkling lights, festive decorations, and beautifully crafted holiday installations that instantly put you in the holiday spirit. The Winter Fantasy is designed to feel like an enchanted village, with winding paths lined with booths featuring handcrafted items from over 150 artisans. You’ll find everything from pottery and glass-blown ornaments to paintings and jewelry—a perfect mix of local artistry and holiday cheer. Each year, my family takes our time strolling through the booths, finding one-of-a-kind gifts for loved ones (and, okay, sometimes for ourselves!). Laguna Beach is known for its vibrant art scene, and the Sawdust Festival Winter Fantasy  showcases this creativity in a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. With every booth offering something original, there’s truly no better place to find gifts that are as unique as the people on your list. Holiday Fun for All Ages (Including Teens!) Even though my kids are getting older, there’s something about the Winter Fantasy that brings out everyone’s inner child. And yes, we still have a tradition of taking a photo with Santa, who somehow manages to be both warm and magical for kids of all ages. Santa’s set-up is beautifully decorated, creating the perfect backdrop for a family holiday photo. (Pro tip: get there early to beat the line if Santa photos are on your agenda.) For the creative types in your family, don’t miss the hands-on craft workshops that are set up throughout the festival. The Winter Fantasy offers DIY classes where you can try your hand at making your own ornaments, jewelry, and more. One year, we made ornaments that now hang on our tree every Christmas, and it’s so fun to reminisce about that day every time we put them up.  Older kids (and adults!) can try their hand at the art demonstrations and can watch the artisans bring their creations to life. It’s mesmerizing, and the process brings an appreciation for the skill and passion these artists bring to their craft. Meet the Makers: Discover Unique Art and Gifts One of the things that makes the Winter Fantasy so special is that each booth is run by the artists themselves. You can chat with the makers, hear the stories behind their work, and get an up-close look at the creative process. Just like the summertime Sawdust Festival, this direct connection adds so much to the experience. There’s something magical about knowing the story behind a handmade piece, especially when it becomes a cherished gift. I love supporting local artists, and the festival offers endless opportunities to do just that. Over the years, we’ve found beautiful pieces of pottery, handmade jewelry, and original paintings that have become some of our favorite treasures at home. And of course, we always pick up a blown-glass ornament for our Christmas tree—each one a reminder of the year’s festival. For art lovers, the Winter Fantasy is an absolute dream. Whether you’re looking for a statement piece or something small, you’re sure to find something that resonates.  Food, Drinks, and Festive Fun with Friends The food court at the Sawdust Festival Winter Fantasy is one of my favorite spots to relax, grab a bite, and catch up with friends. It’s the perfect gathering place to recharge between rounds of holiday shopping and art browsing. Laguna locals tend to run into each other here, so it’s a great spot to bump into friends and neighbors, share a laugh, and celebrate the season together.  From classic comfort food to festive holiday treats, the food court has something for everyone. For families, there are plenty of kid-friendly options. Hot chocolate is always a hit, and you’ll often find live music nearby, on one of the three stages, adding to the merry atmosphere. The sounds of local musicians playing holiday tunes add a delightful soundtrack to the experience, and it’s one of those small touches that makes the Winter Fantasy feel like a true celebration. Tips for Enjoying the Festival Like a Local Here are a few insider tips to help you make the most of your Winter Fantasy experience: Come Early: Arriving early not only beats the crowds but also lets you experience the festival at a relaxed pace. Plus, it gives you a better chance to snag popular items before they sell out! Dress in Layers: Winter evenings in Laguna Beach can get chilly, especially once the sun sets. Dressing in layers keeps you comfortable, whether you’re wandering the booths or relaxing with a hot drink. Get Your Santa Photo Early: If you want a photo with Santa (and who doesn’t?), head to Santa’s booth as soon as you arrive. Lines can get long! Bring Cash: While most booths accept cards, having cash on hand can make transactions easier and faster, especially for smaller items. Leave Room for a Little Splurge: Trust me, you’ll find so many beautiful and unique items that it’s hard to resist picking up a few extras! From handmade jewelry to original artwork, there are treasures around every corner. Why the Sawdust Festival Winter Fantasy Is a Must-See For me and my family, the Sawdust Winter Fantasy is more than just an event. It's a tradition, a gathering place, and a reminder of what makes Laguna Beach so special. It’s a chance to connect with our community, support local artists, and create memories that last well beyond the holiday season. There’s something genuinely magical about wandering through the festival at night, with twinkling lights all around, a cup of wine in hand, and the sounds of holiday music filling the air. Whether you’re a fellow Laguna local or visiting for the holidays, I can’t recommend the Winter Fantasy enough. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the season with loved ones, experience the incredible creativity that thrives here, and find gifts that are as unique and meaningful as the people in your life. So, if you’re planning to attend, maybe I’ll see you there! My family and I will be wandering the booths, snapping photos with Santa, catching up with friends at the food court, and making the most of one of Laguna’s most beloved holiday traditions. • Hiking in Laguna Beach

Exploring in Our Own Backyard Last weekend, my husband and I decided to get out of the house and enjoy a local adventure. One of the perks of living in Laguna is that we’re surrounded by so many incredible hiking trails, and sometimes we forget how much there is to explore in our backyard. So we spent one morning Hiking in Laguna Beach! Hiking in Laguna in the Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park This time, we chose to do a loop combining the West Ridge Trail and Canyon Acres Trail at Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. We parked at Alta Laguna Park in the Top of the World neighborhood, which really lives up to its name! We arrived early enough that parking was still abundant in the lot next to the playground. After making sure we had plenty of water and, of course, our phones for taking photos, we set off. Starting the Hike The trail starts right near the water tank—you can’t miss it. As soon as we rounded that tank, we were greeted by expansive views of the landscape. We could see Aliso Viejo, Aliso Niguel, and Laguna Hills stretched out beneath us, with the distant Saddleback Mountain standing tall in the background. I love moments like this when you can appreciate how much space and beauty surrounds you, even when you’re so close to home. We had a few options from this point. Several trails dip down toward Aliso Niguel, and the temptation to keep exploring different paths was strong. But we had a goal in mind, and we turned left onto the West Ridge Trail, wanting to head toward the ocean. The West Ridge Trail The West Ridge Trail runs across the canyon, parallel to scenic Skyline Drive, which is lined with homes that seem to dangle right on the edge of the canyon. Every time I see those houses, I remember how incredible it was to wake up every morning with those kinds of views - I grew up on that street, watching people hiking around on the very trail we were hiking! The West Ridge Trail itself is wide, well-marked, and pretty easy to follow. One of the things I enjoy about this trail is that it’s multi-use, so you’ll see mountain bikers in addition to fellow hikers. We came across a few cyclists, and it was fun to watch some of them challenge themselves on narrower, much steeper biking trails that splinter off from the main path. The Canyon Acres Trail As we continued along the ridge, we reached a fork in the trail and decided to take the Canyon Acres Trail. Now, this is where the hike starts to get more interesting! This trail is a bit steeper, and the descent was full of twists and turns. It felt a little more rugged and natural compared to the wide ridge trail, but that’s part of what made it so scenic and enjoyable.  We passed sandstone formations and scattered clusters of sagebrush, with the occasional lizard darting across the path. It was also quieter down here, and we didn’t see nearly as many people, so it really felt like we had the trail to ourselves. As we made our way to the bottom of the Canyon Acres Trail, we emerged near the end of the road in the Canyon Acres neighborhood of Laguna Beach. This was the halfway point of our hike, and we had a decision to make: we could have easily just continued walking into town, grabbed a coffee, and called it a day. But no, we had parked all the way up at Alta Laguna Park, so there was only one way to go: back up the hill! The Round Trip - It’s all Uphill! Now, the climb back up Canyon Acres is a different story. What was a relatively easy descent on the way down became a moderately strenuous challenge on the way up. The trail is steep in sections, and I could feel my legs starting to burn after a while.  I wouldn’t recommend going up this trail unless you’re in decent shape—there were a few spots where we really had to take it slow and catch our breath. I’m not sure I’d want to attempt it with small kids, either, unless they’re really used to hiking and don’t mind a tough challenge. Luckily, my husband and I weren’t in any kind of hurry, and we took full advantage of the opportunity to pause and admire the views as we ascended.  Time to Take some Pictures At one point, we found ourselves standing in front of a massive sandstone boulder that seemed like it was made for photos, so of course, we had to take a few shots. There’s something about the contrast between the pale-red rock and the greenery that makes for the perfect photo op, and it’s always fun to look back on these moments later. Hiking in Laguna - Such a Great Feeling As we got closer to the top, I found myself feeling a mix of exhaustion and satisfaction. This wasn’t one of those hikes where you push yourself to the limit, but it was definitely a good workout in parts—especially since we were taking our time and soaking everything in.  By the time we rounded the corner back to the West Ridge Trail, I could see the parking lot and knew we were almost finished. It was a great feeling knowing we had completed the loop and enjoyed every minute of it. The entire hike, including our photo stops and water breaks, took us about two hours and fifteen minutes to complete. In total, it was roughly 2.5 miles, but we certainly weren’t rushing. For us, this was more about spending time together, appreciating the natural beauty around us, and reminding ourselves of how lucky we are to live in a place with such easy access to the outdoors.  Conclusion It’s funny how even a local hike can feel like a little adventure. As we drove back home, we talked about how we need to make more time for these kinds of outings. Living in Laguna Beach, it’s easy to get caught up in daily routines and forget that we have access to some of the most beautiful trails in Southern California.  The hike inspired us to keep exploring new paths, discover more trails, and, of course, find new spots to take those all-important photos!

  • Day Trip to Catalina Island

Escape to Catalina Island for a day of beauty and adventure just off the Southern California coast. A short ferry ride transports you to this picturesque paradise, where rugged hillsides meet pristine beaches. Whether you seek snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, hiking scenic trails with breathtaking views, or simply strolling through quaint shops and eateries, Catalina offers a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. Catalina Island beckons as a great day trip for those looking for a memorable coastal escape. Getting to Catalina is easy from Laguna Beach. The Catalina Flyer departs from Newport Beach, and the Catalina Express sails from Dana Point. We chose to take the 7:45am voyage from Newport Beach, and seemed to arrive on the island in no time at all. Avalon Bay shimmered in the beautiful morning light, providing an amazing foreground for the quaint, crescent shaped town climbing up the hillsides.  After a stroll through the fun streets flanked with cottages and shops, we found the Catalina Coffee & Cookie Company. The peanut butter cookie was amazing, and the coffee was just what I needed before our next adventure on the island. Walking along the shore, past the majestic and iconic Catalina Casino, we checked in at the Aerial Adventure. This is an amazing elevated obstacle course hanging from trees in a small valley behind Descanso Beach Club. After our guide, Ian, made sure our harnesses were secure and that our helmets fit, we tested our strength for the next two hours balancing, hoisting, pulling and pushing our bodies over fun obstacles hanging by ropes from tree to tree. Our group had teenagers in it, so we kept to the intermediate and advanced options, but there are great beginner options for younger adventurers. This was an amazing experience, and is an absolute must do if you come to Avalon with teens or young adults. After the unforgettable experience at the Aerial Adventure, we walked back to the Descanso Beach Resort and had lunch at the outdoor patio/bar. This was the place to be with people everywhere, a DJ, swimmers, loungers, and happy kids. Great food, great drinks, great fun. We walked back to the main part of town by the harbor, passing the Catalina Casino. While it is no longer a casino, it is open for tours. We chose to admire the amazing architecture and murals from the outside, though, and made our way to a golf cart rental shop, across from the Trailhead Adventure Center which is   the Catalina Island Conservancy’s visitor center. Armed with a free map and an easy to follow route, our 6-seater cart zoomed us up and around the hills of Avalon, providing numerous amazing photo stops for our postcard-worthy pictures. Another must do for a first time tourist to Catalina. Back in town after the 90-minute rental, we found plenty of options to fill our time before boarding the ferry back to the mainland. Ice cream shops, outdoor basketball courts, kayaking, paddle-boarding (SUP), shopping, or simply relaxing on the beach were all within easy reach. For a day trip full of adventure and fun, Catalina Island promises a memorable experience. 1-Day Itinerary for your Day Trip to Catalina Island: Catalina Flyer (book a same-day round trip voyage) Catalina Coffee and Cookie Company The Catalina Casino Catalina Aerial Adventure Descanso Beach Resort Catalina Golf Cart Rentals and Tours Catalina Island Conservancy / Trailhead Adventure Center Return on the Catalina Flyer *I am not sponsored by any of the above - they are what I enjoyed on my family's trip to Catalina.
